Enterprise: Family

stern_familie.jpg Is is just me, or is there something (or someone) missing from the Stern cover photo for the article “Enterprise Family: How modern women manage everday life”? This to me sums up everything that’s wrong with the German attitude towards families and children (although I must admit I was so pissed off by the cover that I haven’t bothered to read the article).

Let me explain, in case I’m being too vague. The main thing that bothers me is not that fathers have been (literally) left out of this picture. What bothers me is that women are being given a completely impossible standard to live up to. It’s up to women (and women alone) to assure that their family remains healthy and happy. If they want a career or anything else that gives them satisfaction, they had better damned make sure their family comes first and that they take their 3 year maternity leave to devote every child they choose to bear.

And then Germans wonder why the birth rate is so low.

as i see it, there is no positive role model for men and fathers in the german public agenda.
