MamaMaus has a business meeting in Westerland on the island of Sylt tomorrow afternoon, to be followed in the evening by a reception in the Sansibar beach-side restaurant.
The weather service is forecasting a severe storm for all of Germany tomorrow evening, especially severe on the North Sea coast, with winds in excess of 150 km/h.
I hope she’s not planning a moonlight walk on the beach.

Around here (northwestern Bavaria) they’re warning people to stay indoors and to watch out for flying garbage cans. This wind must be like manna from heaven for all those ugly windmills that have sprouted like mushrooms around here; although, it wouldn’t surprise me to hear that it’s even “too” windy for them.
Hope all of you stay safe – we’re having high winds here already.
I watched an ashtray roll around outside my office building–before a fruitless walk to the train station.
The storm in Weimar is pretty bad–I hate to imagine what it’s like where it is really bad.
MamaMaus reports that they are indeed at the Sansibar this evening. She feels pretty safe since there aren’t many trees on Sylt.
It’s loud and windy here, but I suspect things are worse in central Germany, further south.
It’s been pretty ferocious here all day. I thought it was dying down, but within the last hour it sounds like it has actually gotten much worse. It’s midnight here now.
My biggest worry is that the “new” fake bamboo that I put up on our balcony last Fall will be ripped to shreds (like the “old” fake bamboo was) — that fake stuff isn’t cheap! So far, it seems to be holding up. There is a small section that has started to unravel, though (leaving a 4 or 5 inch gap). With the intensity picking up again, it wouldn’t surprise me if I went to bed with the small section unravelling only to wake up in the morning and find the whole thing ripped to shreds.
Sounds like it was exciting to be in Sansibar during the storm. My husband was watching live reports from Sylt last night (he’s away in the US on business) and just kept calling me to say, I wish I could be there! Exciting storm coupled with great food (and few trees to worry about)… not a bad way to ride out a natural disaster.
MamaMaus reports that everything on Sylt is just fine, except the hangover. The Sansibar has an extensive wine cellar…
Here at home things were relatively quiet overnight, the worst of the storm had already past.
Well, our fake bamboo survived. It looked the same this morning as it did last night (actually, earlier this morning) when I went to bed. Life is good.
Our new neighbors weren’t so lucky. They had recently moved in and had “new” fake bamboo, too. It was torn to shreds. Pieces of it were laying all over the place.
There doesn’t appear to be any significant damage around here. Some minor stuff — garden sheds blown apart, flagpoles torn down, lots of stuff laying all over the place (garbage cans, water barrels, tarps, lawn furniture, kids’ toys, etc. — things that should have been taken inside with a storm like this).
